Marathi Natak is a classical Indian dance-drama performed in Marathi language. It is one of the most popular forms of theatre that has been passed on from generation to generation. The words ‘natak’ means drama and ‘marathi’ means from Maharashtra. In order to watch a natak, you will need to have a ragasthana which is the performance stage where the drama takes place. There are many ragasthanas throughout Maharashtra from which you can choose from depending on your location and needs. The Marathi Natak consists of Indian classical dance and music. It is a classical art form that has many regional traditions that differ from one another. Marathi nataks are based on Indian mythology and epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata and folktales like the Panchatantra and the Baital Pachisi. The tradition of Marathi natak is approximately 600 years old, originating in Maharashtra of India. There are several plays in the tradition including, "Shri Krishna Leela", "Savitri Satyavan", "Nal Damayanti", "Rukmini Satyavan" and "Lavanyavati". The plays are mostly based on the Hindu epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana. There are also plays based on Indian regional literature, which are called "tolas". The costumes in Marathi nataks are typically made of natural fibres such as jute, cotton, silk and wool. The colours used to dye these costumes are derived from natural dyes found in India. There is a wide range of makeup that is used in the performances that includes red, gold, white and green. One needs to be highly trained to maneuver through all the technical aspects of music and dance for this art form. A traditional Marathi natak is directed by a "tantri" (chief director). Typically, performers include dancers, singers, musicians and instrumentalists. Performers are dressed in traditional costumes. Performers wear colourful kurtas with sequinned cholis, sequinned skirts for women. The stage contains elaborate sets with backdrops or stages decorated with cloth pieces forming geometric patterns. The music accompanying the dance is usually played using the tabla instrument similar to an idiophone but having sympathetic strings. It can also be played on instruments that have a similar set of sympathetic strings or just on hand drums only without the tabla-like drum called dholki/dholak. The performance of the play lasts for about 2 to 3 hours. Kedar Natak Academy is the first theater institute in India that offers diploma courses in Marathi Natak.
